Red-bellied Snake

I found this Red-bellied Snake under the bark of a large rotting log. I had just spent nearly two hours in a couple of different habitats not having luck with anything and was getting tired, so I stopped when I came to a woodland clearing to catch my breath and figure out what to do next. I stopped near this large rotting log and eventually gave it a little kick to see how heavy it was, if it was solid, etc. I noticed all the bark was loose so I lifted a piece up to see what might be underneath and that's when I found this snake. I started wondering if the snake was even alive because it didn't move at all, not even flick its tongue, or show any signs of life as I moved around taking photos from different angles. It also looked strangely flat, almost like roadkill, so I touched it to see if it was alive and it indeed was! It quickly slithered off underneath the log and I left it at that.

Terrific shot of this little beauty. They will keep absolutely still as often as not, hoping that it will deter would be predators (since carrion eating is not on every creature's menu).
