Red Squirrels

These infant squirrels were found in one of the Purple Martin nest compartments at today's banding session. It was the first time in history that squirrels have been found in this set of houses. Unfortunately, it appears the mother squirrel ate many of the Purple Martin eggs and nestlings because as we were checking all the compartments leading up to the squirrel we found compartment after compartment with nesting material but no eggs or nestlings. In total, 40 nestlings were banded in the smaller house with 48 compartments (and no squirrel) and fewer than 20 in the larger house with 64 compartments (and this one squirrel). Overall it is the poorest year for Purple Martins at this colony with fewer than 70 nestlings banded today where normally there would be twice that.

Fabulous capture of these very "new" squirrel babies! Sad for the Purple Martins. It's nature at work though....

An incredible story.
One which must be common in the wild, but rarely recorded.
"Red in tooth and claw."

Fantastic image of these naked babies. Nature is cruel, as Carol said, and I sincerely hope that the purple martin folk don't destroy the squirrels. Best to let them grow and leave and take steps next year to be more vigilant about keeping the squirrels out.

I noticed the martins were still bringing pieces of leaves into their nests a few days ago and not insects so wondered how many young they actually had in the houses. Very sad that there are so few. Thanks for the photo and explanation.

Oh my goodness. I have never seen an infant squirrel before and this is a fantastic shot! ~
It is bad news about the Purple Martins in that house though. Nature can be cruel.
