I spent most of the day either sorting through photos on my computer or lying down because I wasn't feeling all that well. At one point I wanted to get out for a while without going too far so I went looking around my neighborhood trails for butterflies. In one of the fields I saw a couple of these freshly emerged Halloween Pennant dragonflies. This was totally unexpected both for the habitat and time of year! Until last year this species was only known to occur locally at one specific location 45 km west of here. They usually emerge late in July and fly until the second week of August. This is late June. And this was in a dry field! But last year I did see a couple Halloween Pennants along the river less than 4 km away and another couple within 10 km. It appears they are expanding their range. I hope these guys stick around so I can photograph them when they get their red coloring! But I am doubtful they will stick around, at least not in a dry field with no appropriate habitat nearby like this. I think they will end up like the Swift River Cruisers that have shown up in my neighborhood in the spring and move on quickly.
