European Starling

Today and yesterday I managed a couple shots of European Starlings (this and the next couple of photos). These are the best shots of this species I've managed over the years. European Starlings have proven tricky to photograph because of the dark iridescence on their plumage and, in spite of their abundance in and around urban areas, they also just aren't very approachable. I have noticed, however, that on a bike I can pass within a foot of European Starlings without them seeming to care, at both high and low speeds, but as soon as I stop and put my foot on the ground anywhere near them, they take off. I tried time after time to do a sort of "bike by shooting" on them last year but they seem to be able to recognize when someone is just passing by and when someone is not.

I know what you mean. For a common bird they are not photographed often, and it is really hard to get a good shot, but this one is fantastic. There he is in all his shining beauty. V
