Nodding Trillium (Trillium cernuum)

Nodding Trilliums are the rarest of the four Trillium species in my area. This was my first sighting of this species and one of only two locations I know of for this species, but I wonder if I may have overlooked this species at other places. Nodding Trillium flowers hang below the leaves and can be easily overlooked from above. Their leaves look just like the leaves on the common White and Red Trilliums, and since Trillium species send up leaves without flowers when they are young, I have a bit of a habit of looking past Trillium leaves without flowers. But there could have been a flower hanging underneath that I missed! Most of the Nodding Trilliums flowers I saw this morning were only visible when I was down on the ground at eye level with them.

Gorgeous!!! This reminds me I should go looking for them in Larose before they finish blooming. Love your pretty and crisp shot.

Wow how cool is this! We have Trillium here and I'm going to ask around if folks have seen Nodding Trillium anywhere here.
