Early this morning I went for a walk in the woods in my neighborhood and the birding scene there felt more like mid-June than peak migration. Most of the breeding birds like Great Crested Flycatcher, Pileated Woodpecker, Common Yellowthroat, Pine Warbler and Black-throated Green Warbler were on territory and migrants were non-existant except for one Veery. All that was missing was a Scarlet Tanager and Indigo Bunting. Later on, when I got home, which by then was barely 10 am, I decided to do as I did last weekend and photograph the birds in my backyard instead of going out elsewhere. Two White-crowned Sparrows showed up this morning for the first time this year. A few Pine Siskins and Purple Finches are still around, but for some reason they are staying in the trees instead of visiting my feeders. A few White-throated Sparrows and Juncos are also still around, on the ground as usual, but numbers of the two latter species are a fraction of what they were last weekend. Curiously, all but one of the White-throated Sparrows left in my backyard (approximately 7 individuals) were of the tan-striped race.
