Spring Serpent

This afternoon seemed promising for spotting my first butterfly of the year. I heard a number of frogs and spotted my first snake, but no butterflies. This snake was very small and it was the only one I saw this afternoon. I also saw my first killdeer of the year and spotted my first live groundhog.

At one point I stumbled upon a geocache in the form of a phone booth hidden away from the trails. I didn't add my name to the logbook because I wasn't sure of the proper etiquette for signing it. The last signature was on March 26, 2011 and I noticed signatures dating back to last year. I have been through this area many times in the past few years, noted this distinctive pine tree many times (it is out of place in this particular area) and somehow I never noticed the large phone booth screwed into the side of the tree until today! But in my defense, the phone booth was on the far side of the tree and invisible from my normal routes in the area.

Love your photo of the little garter snake! I'd been hoping to see one too, yesterday, but no luck. Well done! And I enjoy your photos of the geocache too.

Excellent capture. This little fella must have strolled out of the nest. ~V
