Orthocone

This photo shows a fossilized orthocone. These are the shells of ancient cephalopods, somewhat of a straight shelled version of the nautilus. These are supposedly fairly common along the Ottawa River but I have never found any until this day. Earlier in the summer, when the water along the Ottawa River was at its lowest point in a century, I looked for these along the rocky shoreline in Hull where, according to a university course I took a long time ago, there are supposed to be several, but I couldn't find any that day.
