I spent most of the long weekend away from the fields and forests because I figured all the nature trails and parks in the area would be packed with people. But I did get out on Sunday afternoon to an abandoned homestead off the beaten path. When the skies clouded up it the conditions for photographing the ruins there became ideal. When I got to the site I was surprised to find most of the leaves already fallen, a week early it seemed, so I didn’t end up taking any photos of the abandoned log structures against a backdrop of fall leaves like I planned. Instead I wandered around the woods and along the abandoned lanes and trails in the area. These are all photos from that walk.

The following two photos are pieces of a long abandoned split-rail fence. Above is a long stone wall that once marked a boundary of some sort.

The thick layer of leaves on the ground in this forest made walking a bit of a hazard because they covered up some of the holes and crevices in the rocky ground that were waiting to catch my foot and twist my ankle. I watched my step and managed to get through with only a mild ankle twist. But as I write this up three days later I can still feel it!

I was surprised to find a couple of nice Butternut trees in the area. This one (below) has two trunks growing side-by-side. The bark of Butternut is unmistakable and quite nice to look at.
