This clump of fungi has been parasitized by another species of fungi called Bonnet Mold, a case of a fungi parasitizing another species of fungi! The Bonnet Mold is most visible on the fungi in the upper right corner of the frame. The filamentous "fuzz" are the fruiting bodies of the Bonnet Mold.
This afternoon I took a quick trip out to two specific spots in Stony Swamp to look for fungi. These two spots are older growth areas that were spared the axe when this area was first settled. Not so coincidentally, these two spots are more biologically rich than the surrounding plantation areas that make up much of the acreage in Stony Swamp.
I only spent an hour looking for fungi, but during that hour I encountered lots of fungi including some species that carpeted the forest floor and some coral fungi species. But like all my fungi outings, for every one species I identified there were a dozen that I couldn't! And the most abundant species I encountered, ironically, were among those dozen I couldn't identify!
