Sand Wasp (Bicyrtes sp.)

This sand wasp was busy excavating a nest in the sand. I watched it for 10 minutes and during that time it excavated three times its body size of sand. Nearby there was a small collection of holes with smaller sand wasp species going to and from their nests. When these wasps left the nest they sealed the entrance. These smaller sand wasps may have been Bembix species.

I absolutely love the sand wasps! I love their shiny B&W abdomens, and I love their behaviour. There are several species of Bembix around here, as well as some other ground dwelling wasps such as Cerceris and Tachytes (I think this is the correct sp.)
