My first successful dragon-in-flight! I went to a pond this morning to look for dragons and damsels and there was very little out today. A Canada Darner and this Wandering Glider repeatedly hovered close to my camera tempting me to try the near impossible: photograph a dragonfly in flight. I've tried this before without any success. To get this shot I put the lens into manual focus mode, turned on the high speed shutter (6 fps), and set the aperture to 8 as a compromise between shutter speed and DOF (normally I'd set it at 11). When the dragonfly hovered I then quickly focused manually and when I thought I had good focus I held down the shutter button while making minute manual focus adjustments with the hope that one of these minute adjustments would put the focus point right where I wanted it. This was the one image out of about 25 that turned out.
