My darner find for today was this Black-tipped Darner. When I first saw this darner I noticed the thoracic stripes were not notched like they are in Canada Darner but straight, which gave me clue that this would be a new species for me. Looking at my dragonfly book, I used this field mark to narrow down the species to just Black-tipped Darner and I confirmed that identification by checking S10 to see if it was all black (it was). This was indeed a new species for me. According to my book this darner species is not uncommon and I probably encountered this species many times in the past without knowing it. I didn't have the resources to identify local darners until this year and am only just starting to identify them now.
I didn't find this species in my backyard like the Shadow Darner and Variable Darner but it was only a few hundred meters away. I'll wander back that way soon to see if I can get a photo that doesn't have a black background.
