Little Crow I

This year my neighborhood crows nested in one of my backyard trees. On Monday of this week the nestlings fledged and since then this one particular fledgling has been hanging around my yard. He is unable to fly and initially had no fear of anything including the unwelcome neighborhood cats. The neighborhood cats have already killed a crow nestling that somehow managed to get into a neighboring yard the cats frequent. My yard is the safest place in the immediate area for little crow because it is surrounded on all sides by a fence and I inspect it often to make sure there are no holes through which a groundhog or cat can get in. When a cat does get in and I am aware of it the cat quickly learns that it is unwelcome. Most cats now flee when they hear the back door open.

Little crow often likes to hang around in the area near my shed, often right in the middle of the deck, and when I go out to access the shed little crow is sometimes in my way. The parent crows get very agitated when I approach little crow and start mobbing me when I get too close. But I have to get to my shed! And there is only one way in! There is no such thing as a shed with a back door! By the end of the week little crow was showing signs of fear of me whenever I approached. He would run off, squat and make motion to fly, but all he accomplished was a two foot leap off the ground before he crash landed. By the end of the week the parent crows became less agitated whenever I approached the area where little crow was. I guess they learned, after watching me go back and forth through my yard by little crow many times, that I am not much of a threat. If I could talk to the crows I'd tell them that to me to prospect of eating a crow is very nauseating, so there is indeed no reason to fear me!

During the course of the week little crow has examined every square inch of my yard either by curiously staring it down or by touching it. He is awkward in his conduct, often tripping on his own toes as he walks, and I watched him learn the hard way that raccoon poop is not edible and that it is not possible to just walk up a tree like the squirrels do!

Nice shot of this baby. It's my first opportunity to see a chick, in pixel form. Thanks for sharing in the hopes that it gets to fly soon.

Super cute image and narration Chris. Thanks for sharing. I don't think I've ever seen a baby crow up close.
