Cape May Warbler (male)

This may end up being my photo of the season for spring migration this year. Cape May Warblers are not common migrants around here. I only see two or three each spring and when I do see them they are always in the canopy of tall trees. But today I came upon a Cape May Warbler singing and forging in bushes at eye level. I took this photo when the bird emerged from the bushes and began forging out in the open only about 20-25 feet above the ground. Until then I had never seen a Cape May Warbler low enough to get any type of a photo. The birds at Mud Lake today weren't many but there was some variety around: Blackburnian Warbler, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Great Crested Flycatcher, and Spotted Sandpiper being a few that were around. All of the warblers that were not Yellow or Yellow-rumped were singletons.

I was also at Mud Lake yesterday but saw very little. It was not that there were no birds to see - my ears were telling me that there were a fairly good number of birds around - but that I just couldn't see any of them with all the leaves blocking the view into the trees and bushes. Normally at this time of year the leaves are still at a stage where they are not big enough to block the view into the trees and bushes, but this year, with the early start to spring, some of the trees and bushes were fully leafed out before the birds even came. In spite of the difficulties yesterday I did manage to locate my first Black-throated Blue Warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks of the year.

Excellent shot! Wow! These are one of my favourite warblers. Can't get over the detail and clarity in this shot.
