Dragonflies were very numerous today. I was able to identify this American Emerald along with Beaverpond Baskettail (lots!), Hudsonian Whiteface (only saw one), Dot-tailed Whiteface, and Four-spotted Skimmer (fairly common).
There is a bit of a story to go with this photo. I spent over an hour walking up and down what has become my favorite trail in Stony Swamp watching the abundant butterflies and dragonflies of various species that were along the trail. I saw a few American Emeralds along the way and tried several times to get a photo. I never succeeded, or so I thought. When I took this photo I thought I was photographing something else. I didn't realize it was an American Emerald until I looked at the photo on the computer later in the afternoon!
