Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma)

More butterflies today! March is just wrapping up and so far I've already had 17 butterfly sightings. What an unusual spring!

Today I went out on the trail at 1:30 pm and by then it was hot enough that I was uncomfortably sweating in my light spring jacket. I was expecting to find butterflies right away, but I didn't see any in the usual spots until 3 pm. Between then and 4 pm I saw 2 Eastern Commas, 1 Mourning Cloak, and 1 Compton Tortoiseshell. I also saw my first Turkey Vulture of the year flying over while I was checking the butterfly spots.

Beautiful shot! I love the early commas with their golden spots along the edge of their hindwings. I still haven't seen any butterflies though I'm hoping to tomorrow on my lunch break. V
