It's spring mating season for chipmunks! I watched this male (obviously a male!) chase after a female and play hide and seek with her for quite some time. The female appeared to be trying to escape the male and when she managed to loose him she would hide among the rocks. The male always eventually found her and when he did he approached cautiously in short spurts all the while quivering his tail in an unusual manner. When the male got too close to the female the two tussled a bit before the female ran off with the male following close behind. The whole cycle then repeated itself. Both chipmunks were making very odd vocalizations through out the whole process just like squirrels do during their mating chases.
