Bohemian Waxwings eating grit

The Bohemian Waxwings were also eating grit from the side of the road. Many birds eat small stones to aid in digestion, but this was the first time I've seen Bohemian Waxwings do it. I wouldn't have thought they would need to do this since their diet is high in soft fruit. But they do eat tree buds too and vegetation is famous for being difficult to digest. They may also have been eating the grit for its salt content like moose are famous for doing alongside roads.

Amazing shot! I saw a whole lot of these guys eating grit from Lois Rd. off Range Rd. last winter. They barely moved when I drove along, so I stopped and had some great views.
