The inevitable finally happened. Today all of the smaller bodies of water were frozen over including the pond that was home to the many waterfowl species that have been the subject of my photography for the past two months. The one lingering male Green-winged Teal and the few Lesser Scaup that were still present yesterday were gone today. In place of the teal and scaup were a good number of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls roosting on the newly formed ice. While I was standing next to the frozen pond my attention was also drawn to what sounded like musical notes coming from the creaking and cracking sheet of ice. The river was still wide open today and hosted a small number of Bufflehead and greater numbers of Common Goldeneye and Canada Goose. Canada Goose numbers were half of what they were last weekend.
