The Nine Stones

Saturday 15th January 2005 - Day 28

aka The Nine Maidens...

A stone circle, just above Belstone village. Reputedly Nine Maidens turned to stone for dancing on a Sunday... and yes, there are more than 9 stones! Actually, more likely to be the remains of another Stone Age burial site.

You will notice that there is often a lot of grey sky! Dartmoor is probably the first lump in southern England to be hit by weather systems arriving from the Atlantic, therefore there is more than the fair share of rain. In English terms that is. However, it makes the countryside green. And today there was an almost complete rainbow as well.

Wonderful scenery and story. I guess they were stoned to death by nine men for dancing on a Sunday, too.

Lovely images that typify England - green! Good capture of the rainbow too :)

I like that story and I love that bit of a rainbow in the distance. The gray sky compliments the story I think. Very nice.
