"Even after four voyages, Columbus would never find the large animals or domesticates that he had taken for granted in Europe..Europeans— arriving in a fertile, abundant landscape that sustained millions of Indians for thousands of years— looked around and saw nothing edible..

There remains some debate over the type of pig that Columbus first brought from the Canary Islands, but it is generally agreed that it was an Iberian pig, Sus mediterraneus, the species common to medieval Europe. Compared to the modern pig, this Iberian derivative is smaller leaner, and tusked, weighing between 50 to 150 kilograms. It has a straight back, and a long narrow snout; it does not even have the “curly” pigtail we associate with the animal today. They are alert animals, rugged, and resourceful. Although the pigs vary in color, they are most often black or pink, with small bristles or hairs. In the Andes of South America, their descendents have survived until today and are considered criollo, or native, by local inhabitants, a tribute to their successful adaptation..

Disagreement persists, however, because the pigs were brought on board from the island of La Gomera, which was home to its own variety of sturdy pig adapted to life on the islands since men first colonized the Canaries thousands of years prior. Canarian scholar Antonio Tejera Gaspar reasons that it was more likely cerdo paleocanario that traveled with Columbus. This species is smaller than the Iberian pig, with thicker black hairs, and pronounced curved tusks. Both are descended from the same lineage of wild pig, Sus scrofa. Whichever species came first, it is certain that the pigs brought on subsequent voyages were of both kinds, and that they interbred in the Americas with great success..There was plenty of shade, abundant food, no natural predators, and no European infections to curtail their growth. Omnivorous pigs were willing to eat literally anything— except grassy pastures, which became the domain of cattle and horses..

Their favorite food, however, undoubtedly seems to have been the jobo (Spondias mombim Lin., sometimes called mirobálano or hovos), a tree particular to the American tropics. Its plum-shaped fruit is black, red, or yellow and is used today for medicine and dyes. Pedro Mártir de Anglería swore that pigs, unlike other imported livestock, tasted even better in the New World than they had in Spain due to their new diet..

Oviedo y Valdés also speaks of a different plant native to Hispaniola, which he says the natives called y, that had a similar effect on the pigs..Francisco de Garay reported from Jamaica in 1519 that on the Crown’s hacienda alone there were over one thousand pigs. In 1514 Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar wrote to the king that on Cuba there were thirty thousand pigs..

In short order, the geometrically increasing pig population was too large to corral; they escaped and reverted to wild forms..

Alfred W. Crosby has suggested that, in all appearances, it certainly looked as though Spain’s mission from 1492 to 1550 was to replace people (that is, the Indians) with cows, dogs, and pigs..Spaniards found raising pigs more economically viable than growing crops because it required less manpower, which could then be diverted to other pursuits like mining. On the encomiendas, some Indians tended to the pigs while others worked in the mines; in truth, some of the richest Spaniards, including Francisco de Garay, made money more reliably in pigs than in gold. Pork also became an indispensable part of the Taino and Arawak diets..

In the kitchen, lard was used to make candies, cakes, and deserts, as well as pastry dough..What in English we call lard is denoted in Spanish into at least three qualities: manteca, unto, and sebo. The latter was of the lowest quality, but still served the purpose of providing fuel for illumination.[82] Pig fat, and later the beef tallow that replaced it, was used in oil lamps to illuminate the homes and churches of the New World. Garcilaso de la Vega reports that members of Soto’s Florida expedition used lard combined with the resin from trees to pitch the brigantines for their return journey. Lard could be manufactured into candles, and was also the main ingredient in soap. By the end of the sixteenth century, the tiny village of Saña received more than one-hundred-thousand pigs for the use in tenerías, where they would be manufactured into these diverse products..

Perhaps most strangely to the modern reader, lard had therapeutic purposes..

Padre Cobo tells us that pork, too, was considered medicinal..Lard was especially important in curing an animal disease as well. Mange (called carache or sarna by the Indians), was an external parasite that afflicted the llamas and alpacas of Peru. Vega purports that two-thirds of the flocks died to this ailment until a mix of lard with sulfur was discovered to protect the camelids from infection..

The price of pig in Lima, which Vega puts at only 10 pesos, was thus much higher than it would have been given the demand for its meat alone. It is no doubt with this in mind that in 1652 Bernabé Cobo compares the mineral wealth that the Indies gave the Spaniards (gold, silver, etc.) to the plants and animals that Spain returned in exchange"

Growing peanuts in desperation subtracts from re-farmers' efforts to re-forest. As you can see, the re-farmer is truly remorseful for peanut re-farming hindering re-forestation, but is USAID and 16,000 NGO's half as dedicated to re-forestation as re-farmers? Ilomene Tataille obviously laments over the peanut "scar" in a Petit-Goâve hillside, pictured above, not because white foreign messiahs such as Bill Clinton are sure to be displeased if they should see such an indictment of poor Haitian re-farmers for dragging on a re-forestation project, but rather because all such peanut scars in reforestation projects are mindful as mass graves of USAID piggy bank slaughter and how Haitians farmers have had to retrench from pigs as piggy banks to peanuts as quickest method of withdrawing wealth from the soil now. Pulling up peanut plants for quick cash is made necessary by USAID having killed all the piggy banks. Re-farmers regret that they must rely on peanuts as intermediate storage of value from the soil, instead of on the kreyol pig, piggy banks destroyed by USAID. USAID sacrificed all Haitian pigs to a false god who promised jobs if farmers would all move to concentration camps for labor re-education, but that false god lied and is weak, there are no jobs in USAID concentration camps, so now it is time to give up on false gods and return to the soil. Laurent Lamothe went to Sand Hill Road, in Silicon Valley, and all they had was debt, while most of California's income is from the soil, mostly from marijuana farming and a little from food surplus. Farmers were harvested into USAID concentrations like Site Soley, jobs were not there, USAID sacrificed all those pigs to a false god, no jobs, no pigs, what kind of sorcerors are they at USAID? What kind of shamans, sorcerors, or priests, have said their god required all the pigs to be sacrificed for some new kind of jobs, yet there is no such job? Oh, USAID did bring a new kind of pig, but that new pig came with thousands of priests who wanted even more sacrifice. The old gods and their priests would never demand that all the pigs be sacrificed, but USAID cultists demanded that all the pigs be sacrificed for jobs, but the only new jobs were for thousands of new priests called veteranians for the weak new pigs of the weak, greedy, lying new USAID gods. Even then the new, weak, lying priests were not able to save the new, weak pigs. Obviously the old gods and old pigs were both stronger than the new gods, pigs, and their expensive yet helpless priests called vets and pig doctors.

Scolding farmers whose pigs USAID has killed, for substituting peanuts for piggy banks as mediators between farmers and the soil, is not the way to re-forest. Many farmers have been driven off the land by USAID killing their pigs, and ngo's food-bombing with Bill Clinton's Arkansas rice, bankrupting farmers, driving them off the land, but pig-killers and tree-killers and new shamans called pig doctors, poor starving pig doctors whose weak pigs have all died, need to release harvested farmers to re-farm and re-forest.

USAID and ngo's and Nepalese pig devotees should pay reparations for sacrificing all the pigs to their illusions, and for food-bombing farmers to bankruptcy with Bill Clinton's Arkansas rice, and for Nepalese pig devotees making a covenant at the unknown kreyol pig statue by giving cholera to anyone who has truly cared for kreyol pigs, and by superstitiously sacrificing the blood of thousands of kreyol pig farmers in USAID concentrations like Site Solay. Then re-farmers could afford to return from USAID concentrations like Cite Soleil and re-forest, and re-farm, and replace peanuts with pigs as piggy banks for mediating value from the soil, and re-farmers would re-forest.

Now all farmers have is peanuts, to bring value quickly from the soil, though not as quickly as slaughtering a pig to pay for school and buy school books and uniforms.






Virginia's governor, former governor now, Tim Kain, visited Joel Salatin's Polyface farm. He asked what he could do. Salatin said that the state's troubled forest parks could be saved by letting farmers raise pigs there. Solar-powered portable electric fences would prevent safety issues. Kain just smiled. Grazing pigs in parks would provide the distress which fires are no longer allowed to provide.

This is a great win for farmers who want to interact directly with their customers.”

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund actively supported the legislation. Fund President Pete Kennedy said, “This will keep more of Virginia food dollars in state, and keep the most environmentally conscious stewards on the land.”
