The birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis, ...it is believed that Mykonos Island was named after the grandson of Apollo, Mykons. In Greek mythology, Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Titans. During these ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos (situated about 2 km away), became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens.
Delos is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean.
