Maastricht may be the oldest city in the Netherlands. Maastricht never received Roman city rights but as a settlement it may be considerably older than Nijmegen,which was the first Netherlands settlement to receive Roman city rights. Maastricht's claim is based on the city's unbroken chain of habitation since Roman times. A large number of archeological finds confirm this.
