I grew up going to the Poconos in the summer. I’m 70 so this was in the ‘50’s and 60’s. In those days huge brown spotted moths would cluster around our porch light. We are talking 5 to 6 inches across. At some point, maybe in the ‘80’s or ‘90’s it occurred to me that they were nowhere to be seen and hadn’t been for some time. Do you know what they were and what happened to them? They didn’t look exactly like any of these on this page but were multiple shades of brown with big dark brown circles on their wings. Maybe only one per wing.

Hey, can the clover hayworm be purple, almost magenta? And the head has gold on it too.
I took a picture of a moth that looks terribly close to the clover hayworm and the dolichomia olinalis; except, the photos you have here tell me they are brown. Well, more accurately, burnt amber. Anyway, I was wondering if maybe the one I found was a different type. After all, it was in Michigan.
Thanks! Beautiful pictures, by the way!
