The West MacDonnell Ranges extend a hundred kilometres or so west of Alice Springs. They are not particularly high but very prominent in an otherwise flat landscape. There are numerous gaps through which creeks and rivers flow (occasionally). Many of the gaps have permanent water holes, oases in a generally parched region.
