Nutcracker Rehearsals 2006

The Gwinnett Ballet Theatre's 2006 production of the Nutcracker starts with studio rehearsals. This gallery shows the dancers learning their parts. There will be 12 performances this year and 6 will have live music provided by the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Orchestra. From the studio, the dancers move to the Performing Arts Center for dress rehearsals and then the performances.

These shots are not posed, the dancers have gotten to the point where they ignore me as I frantically move around the studio trying to catch what I see and predict where they will be next. I used my Canon 5D at ISO 1600 and my Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS Lens.

These images are beautiful. Your use of excellent lighting and great composition is a very moving tribute to the ballet. You not only capture the movement but the passion, the emotion and the soul of these dancers. Putting the workout in b&w was an excellent idea, it gives the viewer a better 'feel' of the class, the room, the sounds and even the physical pain that dancers are famous for working straight through. Your galleries remind me of one of my favorite films on the ballet, 'Etoiles: Dancers of the Paris Ballet (2002). Thank you, Michael Corral, Los Angeles, California, USA

Not to be redundant in English - but, hat's off to you Richard on this gallery. As a matter of fact, you have so many great galleries, my hats hang on the wall most of the time these days ;-) No matter how gifted a photographer may be, they would still have to spend years to garner the kind of trust from a group that allows access to capture images of this caliber, at this level of the intimate and spontaneous.
