Peru was a truly fabulous introduction to South America... I cannot say enough regarding how much I loved the country and its people. I was there for only six days as part of a wedding but I wish I had been able to spend much more time in the country.
In addition to at least three days in Lima (start with a comprehensive bus tour to get your bearings), I would highly recommend that you spend as much as three to four days in the Sacred Valley region basing yourself in Cusco. Machu Picchu is a full day in itself - seven to eight hours on the train alone. There was so much to explore around Cusco and its immediate area to view the many Inca and archelogical sites that I wish I had spent more time there.
The train ride down the Urabamba River valley is spectacular if the weather is clear... bring lots of memory for your digital camera. Although I had over 1.5GB with me, I found myself deleting many good pictures to provide space for Machu Picchu itself.
