Rusty Snaketail (Ophiogomphus rupinsulensis)

A common and more silt-tolerant snaketail in streams and rivers throughout the northern two-thirds of Wisconsin. The thorax is bright green with reduced brown striping. The abdomen is brownish with indistinct topspots, and the club is somewhat large with rusty mottling. The combination of bright green thorax and rust-tinged abdomen is unique among clubtails. Green Darner (A. junius) and female Eastern Pondhawk (E. simplicicollis) both have green thoraxes but they are not clubtails (clubtails have eyes widely separated on top of head). I saw only one individual in 2008.
