Rapids Clubtail (Gomphus quadricolor)

A small-ish clubtail that is fairly common at rapid clean waters throughout the northern 2/3 of Wisconsin. It has (1) no yellow on the top of segments 8-10 but bright yellow on the sides of 8 and 9, (2) a relatively small/narrow club, (3) segment 9 equal to or longer than 8, (4) pale yellowish top spots (longer in females than males), (5) complete dark thoracic side stripes, and (6) entirely black legs. Dusky Clubtail is duller, has pale stripes on legs, and has yellow on the top of segments 8 and 10. Green-faced and Mustached Clubtails have larger clubs and segment 9 shorter than 8. I saw only a couple of individuals on one day in 2008.
