This is the most distinctive of the four "baskettails," which are a subgroup of the emeralds named for the ball or "basket" of eggs the females carry on their ovipositors. Prince Baskettails are relatively large and slender and have varying amounts of dark markings on their wings, which makes them readily identifiable during their long, patrolling flights, which can be fairly high overhead. When perched, their dark, pale-spotted abdomen may be curled upward on the outer half, presenting yet another unique appearance. This species is fairly common across all of Wisconsin at streams, rivers, and lakes of varying sizes. If anyone knows the sexes of the individuals below, please let me know.
