Incurvate Emerald (Somatochlora incurvata)

A member of the Somatochlora genus, otherwise known as the "striped emeralds." (1) The thoracic side stripes are dull and pale at best. (2) The abdomen is LONG with small pale side-spots on segments 3-8. (3) Male claspers are pincer-shaped, and the female ovipositor is long and Y-type. This species flies later than most other emeralds (peak may be August) and has specialized habitat of open sedge meadow and bog pools. Incurvate Emerald is an ENDANGERED species in Wisconsin and I was fortunate to find one individual in 2008, a new county record from my favorite muskeg in Iron County.
