Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

Rock Creek Cemetery is Washington's leading old cemetery hosting the crust of local society since 1719. In a beautiful setting adjacent to a National Cemetery and Washington's Old Soldier's home just off of North Capitol Street, Eleanor Roosevelt spent hours meditating here before the Adams Memorial depicted in several of these images. The Memorial was completed in 1886 by Henry Adams, decendent of two presidents and author of the remarkable intellectual autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams. It honors his wife, "Clover" Adams, an early photographer and reputed author of the first "anonymous" book to scandalize Washington ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/tours/scandal/clvradam.htm, download the book, "Democracy", from this page free: http://www.abacci.com/books/book.asp?bookID=498 ), who committed suicide the prior year by drinking cyanide, a photo developing chemical. The statue, regarded by many as the finest American funerary art, was sculpted by Augustus St. Gauden. More on the statue may be read here: http://www.si.edu/oahp/spq/spq95sf1.htm and here: http://www.cosmos-club.org/journals/1998/krinsley.html and here: http://nmaa-ryder.si.edu/journal/v14n2/Mills.html .

Depicted in this gallery are two other notable tomb stones: Upton Sinclair's modest grave marker, and Evelyn Y. Davis's future grave containing a summary of her curriculum vitae, including her two initial divorces (a third divorce is inscribed between two original lines as a later thought). Her name is well worth a Google search; in most articles you find, it will be associated with the word, "gadfly": http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=%22Evelyn+Y%2E+Davis%22
