ELEPHANT SEAL NURSING
The Elephant seal's milk is very thick,
appearing more like yogurt or mayonaise than most mammal's milk.
This is due to the high fat and low water content. Pups are typically 60 pounds at birth,
but gain weight rapidly. The pup locates the nipple, which is very shallow, predominately by smell and, bumps up against it to express the milk which it more laps up than sucks.
