LIME HAWKMOTH (From Egg to Adult )

Followed this Lime Hawkmoth from egg to beautiful adult, noting all the different colour stages of the caterpillar. They were fed on foliage from the Lime tree and when they got to the stage where the colours changed to shades of blue, they began to wander in search of soil.They usually dig down near to the host tree were they turn to chysalis and remain buried until May of the following year.

I just found a Limehawk caterpillar on my driveway in Washington state, west side of the state. Is this usual? When I google it, seems to be of European habitat. Does anyone know if it is common here?

I saw one of these in twickenham a couple of weeks ago. It was only now that I was looking at the picture, I took, when I've realised the blue horn. I thought it looked really strange and at first, I thought it was a poisonous caterpillar as there had been some on one of the trees in the local school. Glad I know what is it now.

My daughter Tess found one today she touched it accidentally and it shocked her as it was so big and unusual. What shall we do with it now it is on our gate post and looks like its searching for something.. no lime trees nearby. Only a lemon tree? Please advise. Thanks

Found one in our yard today (Fredericton New Brunswick Canada) and we don't have any lime trees here - what else do they feed on? We placed him in a bunch of leaves in the woods which surround our house. He was very impressive and have never seen one before!

Found this beautiful moth laying pale green eggs on a small ornamental owl sitting in a pot of a Cord aline plant. It has been in the same spot for 24hrs. No Lime trees near to process the eggs. Wallington Surrey England

I am pleased to find this page on google,as I was concerned that I might be evicting the lime hawk moth's residence,thankfully its good to know that the caterpillar crawls off to nearby soil to become chrysalis,the lime tree is in need of pollarding,as it is so close to the bungalow roof,at least I now know that come may it will be able to return to the leaves on the tree,Heidi,norfolk,uk.

Just found a lime hawkmoth caterpillar (I love its blue pointy horn)crawling across my concrete driveway; it(measures in at 3 inches long and about 1/2 inch around. I live on Whidbey Island in the State of Washington in the U.S.; this is the first time I've encountered one of these gems! Time to find a safe place for releasing him/her.

Found one of these green caterpillars (picture 4) climbing down my gatepost under a lime tree in Rednal West Midlands UK. After taking several photos for the record I put it under a heather bush where it may avoid being picked up by birds. Some years ago we found an actual Lime Hawkmoth sitting on the front wall of the house in the sunshine. Again I photographed it. The wing shape and camouflage pattern is fascinating, like a Vulcan bomber I thought. A few years ago we saw a Privet Hawkmoth in Norfolk, it was similar to this one and so big. We have never seen one of either of these before or since. What a find!

We are in southern Utah, (Desert) and I found one this morning. Huge lime hawk caterpillar! How did it come to this area???????? I thought they live in the east? I put him in the grass near the trees and hope he finds the perfect spot to live his life.

Huge green Lime Hawk Moth caterpillar found by my doorstep in Gloucestershire. Lovely creature - green with beautiful markings along the side. Took it into my back garden and put it near some plants on the soil. Only know what it is after asking someone knowledgeable in my family. Never seen such a big caterpillar as this. My daughters found a caterpillar (Dublin, Ireland) and MothsIreland identified it as the Lime Hawk Moth. They also pointed out that it was only the 3rd recorded instance of a Lime Hawk Moth in Ireland and the 1st larval record!

Found a lime hawkmoth caterpillar identical to the sixth picture on the pavement next to a main road in Bodelwyddan, North Wales this afternoon. Thought we were doing it a favour moving it into the an adjacent bush, hoping now it finds it's way down so it can get on with burying itself! We found one on 15th August in our garden in North East Wales. It burrowed into a plant pot I gave it, and it's still there. I read somewhere it takes around 10 days to change into a chrysalis - but it's still unchanged. Anyone know how long it takes to change?

Found a caterpillar in my garden in Doncaster today, in the pink/blue stage. When I moved it onto my gardening glove it bit and held the glove. As soon as it put it down onto a piece of new turf it started burrowing and disappeared. There is a Common Lime tree adjacent to my house, near to where it was found.

Sitting in the garden and ouR cat was gazing in fascination at something. Upon investigation it was a LH caterpillar. We live next door to a lime tree so have seen several over the years. Apparently they throw themselves out of the tree when they are ready to burrow and pupate. Amazing creatures. Maisie, southampton

Hi - noticed that someone from Caversham found a lime hawk moth caterpillar ....I also live in Caversham Heights and found one today in my garden, which a young robin was wrestling with. I substituted the caterpillar with some bird food and have put the caterpillar in a large soil filled flower pot where hopefully it will dig in ! Have never seen one of these before - fascinating.

Found a Pupa of the Lime Hawk Moth in some stored netting under a Silver Birch Tree about a week ago in Portsmouth and kept it with an Elephant Hawk Moth Pupa and it emerged around 3pm today the 6th June 2014, magical! Didn't know what the Pupa was until it emerged but it was a dark purple/brown colour which I thought was a Privet Hawk Moth Pupa except it didn't have the Jimmy Durante 'nose'

Today we saw a brown hawk moth caterpillar by Withchelstowe in Swindon. Never seen anything like it! We moved it off a busy path onto the grass to stop someone squashing it. We actually thought it must have come across from abroad in something imported, but after reading this forum, now know that it is in many parts of the UK. Strange looking creature! I got a huge surprise when I spotted an enormous one of these crossing a busy cycle path in wavertree park,liverpool today! It was the same size and colour as my ring finger and myself and some other people who happened by couldn't believe its size. Guess it was looking for a nice cosy place to pupate. we diverted other cyclists til he made it to the other side safely!

My son has found a female lime hawk moth caterpillar, on a grass verge on the way to the supermarket. It was blue purple with a distinctive bright blue spike. We have a dilemma, although it looks like it is ready to dig-in, we were not able to find any lime leaves. Does anyone know of an alternative food source?

Our cat Mitzi just found a large caterpillar on our lawn. From your guide it is a Lime Hawk Moth about to pupate. It is almost dark blue/grey in colour and the spike is bright blue. We live close to several lime trees in Northamptonshire which I presume was its food source. Great guide most useful.

I have a Tomato Hornworm that just emerged from it's cocoon and at first the body was long and it had small wings, to my amazement within an hour the wings had grown and now looks very Large. It is crawling around the 10 gallon aquarium. I have 8 more that are still under the soil. I Put a glove on and it set on my hand for observation. Never did I think the wings would grow at a fast rate. Too cool!I also took the advice of another comment and have put sticks in the cage for the Hawkmoth, so it can dry it's wings to be able to fly. Simply amazing!!

I found a lime Hawkmoth caterpillar last Autumn and decided to keep it. Last year exactly the same happened with an elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar that was wondering accros my drive and it successfully emerged as a beautifull moth in May last year. The Lime Hawkmoth has now emerged but I am not sure what to do. The temperature is about 5 degrees and I am wondering whether it will survive. Also what plants do the moths themselves feed on.

Found this guy on the pavement just outside the Vancouver Island University and relocated him to some ground foliage away from bikers and runners. It's defence is amazing. It's back pincers grip onto the surface it is on, and it lashes its head back and forth like a small sledge hammer; if the ground is solid and it cannot latch on it would do pirouettes, and it's whole body would lift and spin dramatically. We found a lime hawk moth caterpillar yesterday on the pavement outside our house. On the basis it was during the school run, and that there were lots of children running down the street, not to mention hungry birds looking for a quick snack, we took him in and put him in a large container with lime leaves and soil. He was bright green when we found him, but last night he spent a good hour 'licking' himself like a cat and is now brown/ purple and looking for a spot to burrow into the soil; he's nearly hidden now! How great to see the change in colour. I wonder if the 'licking' plays a part? We hope to see him again in spring.

We were just getting out our paddling pool when we spotted two of these moths mating inside it. My little boy would like to know how long that will take as he doesn't want to disturb them, but would quite like to go paddling some time soon. Can anyone answer this admittedly unusual question?

my daughter found a chrysalis on a school trip just on the gass and brought it home. she popped it on a scarf in a mesh mag and left it. After approx 5 months (now being 30th april) it has hatched and its the most beautiful moth i have ever seen it big enough to see every detail....and her teacher did'nt think anything would happen! We are in shropshire,england.

Have just found the most beautiful lime hawk moth caterpillar in the garden, munching away on my favourite tree. We are in Spain, about 100km south of Barcelona, I assume this is a normal climate for them and shouldn't worry about it in the oncoming winter.

I found a dead one in my porch this morning in Andover, MA. It really freaked me out! It is huge, especially the abdomen. At first I thought it was a leaf, then I got close to it (it was on the floor, but looked as if it had landed there) and realized it was a moth. Never seeing anything like it, I attempted to "catch it" with a glass and piece of paper, at which point I realized it was dead so catching it was pretty easy! I don't know if these are supposed to be in my area or not: I know I grew up in this area, and am definitely what one would consider a "nature boy" but in over 40 years never have I seen such a thing as this. It's beautiful, but eerie, at the same time. Very odd.

I live in a small town and I have seen many moths before. but one day I went outside and saw this strange looking leaf on our porch on one of the pillars. but when I got closer I realized...it was a HUGE moth. I tried looking up what in the world it was. I did let it go a few hours later after giving it some moth/butterfly jam. (It looks ALOT fatter after I gave it the jam) And then it flew away. I was afraid to touch it with my bare hands cause it looked so creepy! It was a dark brown color all over with some shades of black. I swear that was the hugest moth I have EVER seen.

I found an adult caterpillar in south London yesterday. I think it had just fallen out of a tree, but it doesn't seem very lively. I can't decide whether there is something wrong with it, or if it is just ready to chrysalise and has begun to start the process. I have lightly covered it with soil in a container at home and have put it in a dark cupboard. Fingers crossed it's ok and will be a beautiful moth in the Spring.

My daughter (5) found one of these caterpillars in the sand pit at school in the UK. It was looking for a place to dig in. Thanks to your advice, it is now re-homed in our garden, ready to sleep away the autumn / winter and emerge next spring. Great tips, much appreciated by all.

We too have found a lime hawk moth in portland oregon. We have retained it in a large size jar for 2 days. Concerned if we should release it but it has been 107 for two days and we figured we were doing it a favor by providing a more tempert environment. However, we do see 5 small red spots on the glass of the jar. Are these from the moth? Are these from a spider that came in on the branch we put in the jar. We looked up moth poop and it isn't red spots. Also, according to the literature on line I dont know if this species belongs here. It seems to be a more northern species. Should I retain the species? We attempted to contact the zoo with to no avail ----- ADVICE PLEASE!

I believe that we just found one of these here in Portland, OR. Im finding it extremely hard to believe. Could it be any other kind of species?

Hello. Yesterday I rescued a lime hawk moth from the front window of a shop in my local high street. I brought it home and placed it in a large airy container idoors hoping it would gain enough strength to be released. However, over night it seems to have weakened to the point of being barely alive but has laid 5 eggs. How should I care for them to give them the best chance of survival? Many thanks.

I found a female Lime-hawk moth on Kings Cross station London, platform 9a. I now have it at home where I have a lime tree. What can I feed it on? How long should I keep it before I let it go? I have never seen one before.

We found one of these in our flower garden moving across the mulch. Took a picture of it and did some research that brought us too you. We let it go so it would start digging it's hole where we found it. We live in Brooklyn Center ,Minnesota. It sort of reminds me of the movie ...Tremmers.
