The most famous of all slot canyons, and the easiest to get to, if not get into, is Antelope Canyon. It's located just east of Page, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. In the old days, you'd have to get a permit at the trading post in town, and drive yourself in to the south section, or rent ladders in town to go into the north end. Now, you have to pay a fee at the entrances, just off HWY 98. You are taken into the south, and more recognizable portion of Antelope Canyon. You walk into the north end and use permanent ladders that have been installed since a tragic flash flood killed nine visitors in the north section years back. Despite their permanence, it's a tight squeeze when you're carrying a backpack of camera gear and a tripod. Especially if you're not quite as nimble as you used to be, like me. It's also much more crowded than it was in the "old days" and a steady stream of traffic can be frustrating.

Another worthwhile slot is Buckskin Gulch, a companion area to Coyote Buttes. Buckskin is 16 miles long, so there's more than enough opportunity to find nice shots. However, it's easy to get turned around walking in the canyon, and being in the right place for the right light at the right time can be hit or miss.

There are a wealth of other slots in the desert southwest, and plenty of books to help you locate them. Some are very tricky to get into, and might even require technical skill.
