The drive along HWY 24 through Capitol Reef (the waterpocket fold) is, in my opinion, one of the most scenic in the country. It is roughly a ten mile winding drive through the "reef" from the east end of the park to the visitor center, and another 8-10 miles along the face of the reef to the town of Torre. There is also a 10 mile scenic drive heading roughly south into the park along the western face of the "reef". There are two spur roads off this scenic drive, one into Grand Wash, and the other into Capitol Gorge. One of my favorite parts of Capitol Reef beside the usual iconic landmarks, are the wall patterns. They're full of potholes and desert "varnish" of all colors and kinds. I hope to have a gallery up soon solely for such wall patterns. It gets expensive trying to shoot them with 4x5" ($4 a shot) so I used 35mm film on a recent trip and am waiting for the film to come back from the lab as I write.
