French Church and two VC

Vietnam

I shot this picture during my first trip to the bush. We had been setup on a nearby hilltop and were on our way to a field from which the helicopters could pick us up to return to the rear. This was an old French church that is obviously in a state of serious disrepair. Located in the free firezone no one lives in the area.

The most memorable part of this place were the two dead VC, a man and a woman, that we had to walk around. The VC had been dead for some time and were just left to rot. Without going into any details it was quite a sight and smell. It was an awakening to see this at the time and fortunately this was my only experience of this kind. The helicopters didn't come in that afternoon so we had to sleep in the area. It was errie having these bodies so close by.

A fantastic image of a macabre moment. The church is fascinating... the pathos of the corpses left to be reclaimed by the earth. Thank you for the sharing.
