Christiania is like no other place in Copenhagen. It started in the 1970s when a group of squatters took over an abandoned military base and turned it into a self-governing commune. They’ve built their own rules, separate from Danish law, and continue to run the area with collective decision-making and a strong anti-establishment spirit.
Wandering around, you’ll see colorful murals, handmade homes, and a vibe that still feels rooted in the counterculture. While things have gotten a bit more organized over the years, Christiania holds on to its free-thinking roots. It's truly where the past rebels still shape the present. Although it must be said it is slowly integrating into the Copenhagen culture. Things are not as wild as they once were.
