February is calving season for whales in the Sea of Cortez. Pangas, an open motorboat, are often used for whale watch trips and get very close to the pods. We found the best show, however, was from the beach and the balcony. We could watch the mothers and their calves play in the shallow waters near the shore. The calves would act like puppies, breaching 5-10 times as they headed up or down the coast.
