Blowing Steel

"Blowing Steel"
Bethlehem, PA. Circa 1925.
by George Pearse Ennis (1884-1936).
At Penn State University, Earth and Mineral Sciences, Steidle collection.
During steel-making by the Bessemer process, air is pumped through the molten steel, burning excess carbon and other impurities, and causing the blast shown in the painting.
The painting's canvas is not entirely flat, and some reflection from the overhead fluorescent light is visible.
