Spotted Deer (Axis axis)
Also known as Chital (Cheetal) or Axis Deer, this is the commonest deer species in Sri Lanka (and the Indian subcontinent). It is the main prey-species of Leopards and so following up on its alarm calls may sometimes lead to a leopard-sighting.
