PIRANG

This much under-rated site is a fantastic birding area containing a rich mosaic of habitats which includes mangroves, freshwater marsh, open freshwater pools, brackish water pools, scrub, dry saline flats, cultivations, savannah woodland & an area of rich but rarely visited gallery forest.

Pirang is just under an hours drive from Kotu/Kololi along the south bank road. The main site is centred around a (currently) disused shrimp farm which consists of numerous rectangular ponds bounded by sandy bunds. There are buildings along the access road which mark the track leading up to the shrimp farm gate. The gate is usually locked but can be easily negotiated -the most productive ponds are a good 50 minute return walk across sun-baked bunds though usually the trip takes three times as long due to the great birding (make sure you take a wide-brim hat & bottled water).
