Masai-Mara

I can't find enough superlatives for this place, it is simply one of the best wildlife venues on the planet. The Mara-Serengeti eco-system holds one of the biggest concentrations of wildlife on Earth. The superherd follows a circuit around Kenya's Masai-Mara & Tanzania's Serengeti chasing the rains in search of new grass. From July/August to late October/November the big game circus hits the Mara & at that time it's the place to be.

A 4 day/3 night trip cannot possibly do the Mara justice. To get interesting high quality wildlife images a much longer time, preferably spent on an organised dedicated photographic Safari, is what is really required. Weather is another factor; even in the dry season rains are not uncommon & we were unfortunate in having two overcast days & heavy rain in the afternoon of our third day. That said, our trip exceeded all expectations, & given the limitations of a family safari I am really quite pleased with the images I got.
We stayed at the excellent Mara Intrepids camp on the edge of the Talek river in the centre of the Mara GR & used the same open-sided Landrover & driver throughout.
Our driver/guide was called Silas. He was excellent company, very knowledgeable, highly skilled as a driver and a brilliant guide. Silas had a consistent ability to place us exactly where it was happening & despite our short stay we were lucky enough to observe two successful lion kills (one of which I caught on video). Unfortunately there was not a major river crossing during our stay though we did witness an ambush on the smaller Olare-Orok river.

This gallery is split into two, a gallery for Mara birds & a gallery for the other wildlife.
