Being very buoyant the Dipper has to throw itself into the water then flap half-open wings to propel itself under. Once underwater it tends to face into the current with its head down walking along the riverbed. The force of the current pushes down on its back effectively pushing it down onto the riverbed. Once foraging is complete it simply lifts its head & floats to the surface.
