Amazingly this young Wildebeest was grabbed from the river & despatched by a young male Lion who then tried to pull the carcase up the embankment. He took about 15 minutes to pull the dead weight up the steep incline. Meanwhile another ambush was ready to be sprung about 75 metres away. At this point I put down my camera & picked up the camcorder so I have no stills of this action.
By the time the carcase was hoisted up the river embankment the Lion had no strength left to pull the Wildebeest over the overhanging lip. He released his mouthgrip to catch his breath & the carcase fell back down into the river where my son took this picture. Seconds later as our attention was diverted to other action the water erupted as a massive croc grabbed the carcase & pulled it under. The carcase & the croc disappeared into the murky water in a split-second despite the water being under a metre deep!
