This is an extensive & vitally important habitat in Extremadura. Dehesa is open wooded pastureland which is untouched by fertiliser, herbicide or insecticide. It holds a wide range of herbaceous plants & is very insect-rich. The birdlife in Dehesa is also very rich & being open woodland the habitat is accessible to broad-winged raptors.
Dehesa is grazed by large mobile herds of cattle, black Extremaduran pigs & sheep. With such large numbers of livestock dead carcases & carrion are frequent helping to support large Vulture populations. The open woodland is also rich in rabbits, rodents & other small mammals & is the primary habitat for Spanish Imperial Eagle(Adalbert's Eagle) which is one of the rarest large raptors on Earth (currently around 220 breeding pairs).
