Picture this: I drove through Monfrague in the pre-dawn darkness to get to the Portilla del Tietar for sunrise. I settled in at the mirador as the first rays of sunrise lit the hillside -a deep burnished copper colour. A Nightingale sang from the waterside scrub as a party of Night Herons flew past heading to an upstream roost. Two Eagle Owl chicks were sitting outside of the nesting cave watching the Griffon Vultures on the overhead crag as they wakened to a new dawn. I sat transfixed for two hours during which time I saw Griffon, Black & Egyptian Vultures; Eagle Owls; Booted, Short-toed & Spanish Imperial Eagle;, Black Kite; Black Stork; Grey & Night Herons; Bee-Eaters & numerous passerines but not one single person! The beauty of the hillside, the range of birds seen & the solitude make this one of my most cherished birding experiences.....sadly all I have to show for it is this crappy digiscoped image!
