Previously this and the Common Waterbuck were considered separate species with the Defassa Waterbuck being found to the west of the Great Rift Valley and sporting a solid white rump whilst the Common Waterbuck has a white rump ring which extends above the tail and is found to the east of the Great Rift. In fact where the two populations meet they freely hybridise and are now felt to be races of the same species.
