A subspecies of Cape Eagle Owl which many authorities treat as a separate species.
There is a local protection initiative for this formidable owl run by local people. For a small fee visiting birders can be taken to view roosting birds whilst a local education programme advertises the service this owl does in consuming rats and other crop pests.
Unfortunately the front suspension of our vehicle packed-in en-route so we had to return to the nearest big town for repairs -this lost us five hours so we only had the opportunity to view this bird distantly. The original plan was to spend a few hours at this site on our way from Sweetwaters Camp to Lake Baringo.
